Wood balance boards provide a firm, stable surface for inversions which help reduce stress on the wrists. Hand stands are extremely stressful on the wrists and in addition to properly exercising and stretching your hands/wrists/elbows/shoulders, the proper surface will also help protect them from injury. Soft surfaces such as gymnastic mats, carpet, carpet, and even grass can allow the wrists to to sink lower than the fingers which increases the stress the wrist can experience.
